The purpose of this system is to give the scientific community a centralized Internet (Email) address to which questions/comments/answers in the various fields of Microscopy & Microanalysis can be rapidly distributed to a list of interested individuals and organizations. Reasonable decorum and professionalism are expected at all times. The Listserver is moderated by the SysOp and monitored for complaince with its rules.
For the purposes of this discussion forum, Microscopy & Microanalysis should be considered to include all techniques which employ a probe such as: photons (including xrays), electrons, ions, mechanical and/or electromagnetic radiation to form a representation or characterization of the morphology, crystallography, elemental, chemical or electronic structure of any material in either physical and/or life sciences applications.
Some of the more common techniques which are associated with these fields include the following: optical microscopy, xray microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, scanning ion microscopy, analytical electron microscopy, electron microprobe, xray energy dispersive spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, electron diffraction, convergent beam diffraction, high resolution electron microscopy, high voltage electron microscopy, etc. (the list continues...ad infinitum.. )
IMPORTANT NOTE#1. To unsubscribe you must supply the original address which you used when you first submitted your subscription. Over the last few years I have found that many users have their mail forwarded to new addresses, or use an alias. When they then try to unsubscribe, they forget where there mail is being sent to (or forwarded from). This causes me lots of headaches. So just remember in order to unsubscribe you from the list, the listserver must know the your original subscription address to remove it!

IMPORTANT NOTE #2: Do not send subscribe/unsubscribe message to "Microscopy@microscopylistserver.com". When you do this ALL members of the listserver receive your message. All administrative issues should be sent to "Listserver@microscopylistserver.com" and not to the general mailing list.
This listserver operates with a semi-automatic Email Filter. Each message header is scanned for a list of keywords and/or phrases which may indicate SPAM/JUNK mail. When the flag is triggered, the mail is stopped and a message is sent back to the poster indicating the reason for rejection. If you have a valid posting, READ the rejection notice and follow the directions. Your Email can then be reviewed the reason for the rejection message discovered and then appropriate action will be taken. Please remember that this is a protection system for everyone and occassionally completely valid messages will be stopped. Only by replying to the instructions will we be able to correct your particuliar problem.
A special note: ALL EMAIL containing attachments is AUTOMATICALLY rejected. Attachments are one of the most common way that computer virus's are transmitted by Email especially they are embedded in various documents. Removing the attachment will generally allow your message through, unless of course your Email triggers yet another different "warning flag".
VCF cards and formatted text hat some WWW based Email programs "append" to Email messages are also "attachments". The filter does not differentiate attachments. The simple solution is for those of you who may be affected to reconfigure your browser/mailer not to send VCF cards and insure that your Email client is set to send only PLAIN or ASCII text. (Netscape and MS Outlook is particuliarly bad in this regard) so WWW-based Email users beware!
Yes.
1.) Please insure that your correct Email address is listed in the FROM: record. You may need to enter this in the Preferences option of your Email program. Contact your system administrator if your not sure what to do here.
2.) DO NOT set your Email Program to automatically reply to all messages, or to request a return receipt. If either of these are done, you run the risk of creating an Email loop within the system. This may result in a message bouncing through the system for several days, filling up everyone's mail box!
3.) Generally it is best to terminate each line of
your message at less than 80 characters. This avoids
the occassional problem of messages getting chopped
up. Some mail routers, limit the number of characters
per line. If you exceed 80 characters it is sometimes
possible that your message will become randomly truncated.
If your not sure, then simply enter a

Make sure your Email program is sending only PLAIN/ASCII text. Do not
send formatted (HTML encoded) text. This type of text is appended to
your Email as an attachment. This means your message WILL be automatically
rejected. There are NO EXCEPTIONS. If you can't turn this off, then you
should use the WWW based form at http://www.microscopylistserver.com/MLFormMail.html to
submit your message.
5.) Do not set your Email program to deliver "out of the office/vacation"
messages. If you will be gone, you should unsubscribe from the list and
subscribe again when you return.
6.) It is not out of line to provide your company name, Email address or WWW site as
part of your signoff/signature line, at the end of ANY message you post to this system.
Anynomous posting of Email is frowned upon.
Compose your message offline, then read it a second time!
Send your message by Email to: "Microscopy@microscopylistserver.com"
As a courtesy to the readers of this list please indicate in the
subject line of your message a reasonable descriptive title of your
comment/inquiry. Also preface your description by the conventional
abbreviation of the type of microscopy you are interested such as
LM, IRM, XRM, TEM, SEM, AFM, STM, uProbe...... For example,
if you are interested in optical microscopy and have a question about
staining then a Title/Subject line for your message might be
Subject: LM Need help on Staining Cells
or if you are interested in TEM analysis of dislocations then
Subject: TEM Dislocation Loop Analysis
This way individuals can filter out the messages
that they may not be interested in.

HTML attachment in your Email message. You must set your Email client to
send only plain/text to the Listserver. Go to your preferences option in your

Receiving Listserver Email via AOL is not a problem, however posting
messages directly from your AOL Email account is a problem.
AOL automatically formats all of

this option off in AOL software. This means that EVERY message you send

If you do this (i.e. use REPLY) then, in most cases, only the
person that
originated the message will see your response. The current
configuration
of the Listserver is such that a message is basically REFLECTED from
the microscopylistserver.com site to all subscribers on this list. the
repackaging of the message is minimal and not all Email programs
will recognize that the message reply needs to go back
to Microscopy. A good fraction will reply back only to
the originator. Therefore, if you want everyone to benefit
from your problem and and/or it's answer you must send it as a
message to "Microscopy@microscopylistserver.com"
Basically any question/comment/observation
or general information/announcement which involves
microscopy and/or microanalysis. This list is
not moderated, so it is up to the users to
selfpolice themselves. I generally take an openminded
attitude toward questions. If in my opinion, it appears that
a discussion is straying far off the limits/theme of
this forum I will post a note to the group. But
I prefer to err on the safe side with most messages
and allow at least a modicum of generally. Clearly,
generic questions about Word Processing and similiar off-topic
items do not belong
in this discussion forum, so just use common sense and
have respect for your colleagues. There are other

Brief announcements about meetings/short courses on microscopy and microanalysis
are permitted from both commerical and non-profit organizations should be similiarly
short and refer the reader to a WWW
site for extended details. Reminders/Followups should not be posted, unless there
is a significant change in the venue (time, location, ...). For example, a once a year
announcement of a short course is permitted, but a reminders about short courses
a few weeks in advance are not within the spirit of these guidelines.
You should also list your short course/meeting at the following WWW Site

Digest Mode is not available on the present server.
Digest Mode compresses all message from a single day into one long message which is then sent to all subscribers. It is a nice option, but I have no plans on implementing this mode.
Nope, not here. There are other listservers which deal with specific topics, but this one is general. At sometime in the future I may consider creating subtopics. But really that is what the SUBJECT line is for. Please use a good description for your message! I've learned alot by just "listening" in on discussions about topics I know nothing about. You may also find the same is true for you.
Not any longer. For a time this Listserver automatically forwarded all postings to the SciTechnqiue.Microscopy Newsgroup. However, the link to that newsgroup has been lost at the receiving end. A link may once again be possible in the future, when hardware and software is upgraded.

This listserver is run by Nestor J. Zaluzec (zaluzec@microscopy.com) It has been & continues to be run/administered/babied mostly in his spare time and usually late in the evening or earlyhours of the morning.
Because this list acts as a reflector, when message delivery fails and is returned to the system it goes to the originator of the message. Due to the large number of users on this list it is ineveitable that some systems will go offline, are down for maintenance, or simply shut down by the user. The mailserver tries to deliver messages several times before it gives up.

First, if you received the instructions, after submitting instructions, then your Email program must be working. So no further testing is really necessary.

Remember every time you post a message to the Listserver over 2000 copies are sent. This not only wastes processing time on my computer, but gets lots of people angry at wasted bandwidth.
